Gerard Piqué Reveals When He Plans to Retire – and Insists He Will Never Play for Another Club

?Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué has admitted that he plans to retire from football when his current contract expires in 2022.

The 32-year-old remains a vital player for Barcelona. He has started 15 of Barcelona’s 16 games so far this season and has played the entire 90 minutes in each, missing just one match through suspension.

However, speaking to ?Mundo Deportivo?Piqué confessed that he plans to retire in 2022, but he is prepared to leave even earlier if he feels that ?Barcelona no longer need him at the club.

“My last team will be Barça. I have absolutely no intention of wearing any other shirt because the only reason I am playing football is basically because I have been culé (a Barcelona supporter) all my life,” he admitted.

“For me, being at Barça is the biggest dream of all. My only dream as a child was to wear the Barça shirt. While I still feel strong and willing, I will wear the shirt of Barça and when they do not need me, I will leave football.

“Contracts are there to be fulfilled. I intend to play until 2022, but I don’t have a crystal ball and I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do it.

“If I see that I lose importance or see that I am not at the required level, I have no problem leaving earlier. I think it will not happen because I know myself and I am able to keep going until 2022, but you never know.”

A product of the Barcelona academy, Piqué has gone on to make a whopping 513 appearances for the club. He is widely viewed as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation, and certainly has the trophy cabinet to back that up.

The Spaniard has won eight ?La Liga titles since 2008, while he has also lifted the ?Champions League three times in the same period. He will certainly hope to add to his trophy haul before retiring in 2022.
