Quique Setien is set to meet Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu on Friday for crunch talks that could result in ‘radical decisions’ being made.
La Blaugrana put up a weak defence of their La Liga title this season, with Real Madrid’s success confirmed on Thursday after victory over Villarreal, while Barça suffered a poor 2-1 home defeat to Osasuna.
Ernesto Valverde was relieved of his duties at the club earlier this season with Setien taking over the mantle, but there have been question marks over his style and authority after winning 14 of his 22 matches in charge to date.
As per AS, Bartomeu will sit down with Setien throughout Friday to discuss his state of mind prior to Thursday’s debacle, at a meeting which will have the tension ramped up following the damning comments made my Lionel Messi following the loss.
He admitted: “We need to be self-critical, starting with ourselves, but also globally. Because we are Barcelona and it is our duty to win all the time. There is obviously room for improvement and we need to start thinking about the Champions League. We all want to win it. But we need to be self-critical, improve a lot, and change a lot. I hope we get it all done in time.”
Bartomeu, Eric Abidal and Grascar Grau had previously visited Setien in his home earlier in the month to discuss plans for the coming season, with the president confirming that the club would stick with their under fire boss for the long-term.
However, such has been the limp displays of late that a drastic turnaround has taken place, with radical decisions expected to come as a result of Friday’s meetings. The events in Barcelona are said to be ‘accelerating rapidly’ ahead of what could be significant changes at Camp Nou.
