?Barcelona entered the New Year top of La Liga and two points clear of their main rivals Real Madrid.
On the face of it, everything is going swimmingly for Ernesto Valverde’s men as they also comfortably qualified from their Champions League group. However, there is plenty of room for improvement.
With a slew of midfielders linked with a move away and the Neymar question constantly being asked at the Nou Camp, the 2020 January transfer window could be a busy one. With all this considered, here are a few possible moves the Catalan club should make throughout the month.
Dani Olmo (Winger/Attacking Midfield)
With a move to ?Barcelona seemingly edging closer and closer for the Dinamo Zagreb starlet, it would make sense to include him in this list. Barça are said to have tabled a bid for the Spaniard and talks are now ongoing according to several reports with the player very keen to return to Spain.
He suits Barca down to the ground, too, having spent seven years in the academy before being let go. A dynamic attacking midfielder who can play seemingly anywhere in a forward position, Olmo would fit nicely into this free-scoring Barca side.
Have they finally found their Andrés Iniesta replacement?
Jadon Sancho (Winger)
Forget Neymar. There is one winger that Barcelona should make their absolute number one target and that’s ?Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.
With nine goals and ten assists in 15 Bundesliga games, the Englishman has continued to show the world just how good he is. Of course, Barca would face tough competition from across the globe for his signature – but this is Barcelona we are talking about.
Offer any player the chance to play in a front three alongside Lionel Messi and they would be absolutely mad to turn it down. Make it happen, Valverde.
Donny van de Beek (Central Midfielder)
They couldn’t, could they? Well, they should. Van de Beek has been constantly linked with rivals Real Madrid but he would suit Barcelona so much more.
They need central midfielders and it would be some story if they bought Van de Beek and reunited him with Frenkie de Jong in the centre of midfield. Rakitic and Vidal are past it, Van de Beek is only 22 and seems like a perfect substitute.
De Jong and Van de Beek together in the centre of the park would make Barcelona even more of a threat in the ?Champions League.
Milan Skriniar (Centre-Back)
Sadly, ?Gerard Piqué is getting no younger and Barcelona need to find his replacement. Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti will continue to battle for the other spot in the back line but Inter’s Skriniar would be a perfect replacement for the Spaniard.
Calm and collected on the ball but also can put in some big challenges, the Slovakian is already a Barcelona-type player. Again, to lure him away from the San Siro, Barça would have to provide a hefty amount of money.
Donyell Malen (Forward)
Unfortunately for Barcelona, Piqué is not the only player in their first team that is coming to the twilight of their careers. Luis Suarez is 32 and is also being linked with a final career move away to the MLS.
Malen is a talent and is part of this new Dutch generation that is breaking through. Barcelona don’t necessarily need to add goals ?at this current moment but in years to come, Malen will be prolific.
He’s bagged 11 in 14 Eredivisie performances so far this season and at only 20-years-old, he can only get better. At this point, Barcelona need to look to seasons ahead and Malen can be part of that.
