Pep Guardiola Backs Ernesto Valverde Amid Speculation Over Barcelona Coach’s Future

?Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has backed Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde to succeed amid uncertainty over his future at the club.

Barca were knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool in the semi final stage after winning the first leg 3-0 and also lost the Copa del Rey final to Valencia, but did win the La Liga title by a comfortable 11-point margin.

Ernesto Valverde

Guardiola spent four years in charge of the Catalan giants, winning 179 of his 247 games in charge and believes ?Barca will continue to succeed with Valverde at the helm.

The former ?Bayern Munich manager said, as quoted by ?Marca, stating: “Away from the great friendship that we have, Ernesto is spectacular.

“He’s done a very good job. Sure he lost the Champions League, we all did. [He’s the manager of] a team that has won two leagues in a row and plays good football, I’m happy that he’s staying.

“Barcelona continue being loyal to his style.”

The ?City manager also defended Valverde over Barca’s loss to Liverpool in the Champions League semi final. Barcelona gave away a 3-0 lead to lose 4-3 on aggregate and Guardiola said the standard between the two teams was incredible.

He added: “Barcelona and Liverpool are [both] very good teams. When the standard is so high, if one team has a bad game, that’s when you lose.”

Pep Guardiola

Guardiola then gave his thoughts on the Reds and his other rivals in the Premier League, adding: “We have an amazing rivalry, but not only with [Liverpool], there are five other strong teams and that’s why the Premier League is so tough.

“Next season we will start from zero and we’ll see what happens.”

Champions League Best Goals 2018/19: The 10 Best Strikes This Season According to UEFA

At the conclusion of yet another thrilling Champions League campaign, the world bore witness to Liverpool hoisting the most coveted trophy in club football after defeating Tottenham in Madrid and avenging last season’s loss in the final.

Following the final, UEFA’s Technical Observers (a team which includes the likes of David Moyes, Roberto Martinez and Raul) picked out the best goals of the tournament.

Here’s a rundown of the top 10 in the Champions League this season according to ?UEFA.

10. Luis Suarez (Barcelona vs Liverpool)??

After vowing to celebrate against his old team, Suarez got exactly what he wanted in the ?Champions League semi-final tie with Liverpool. The Uruguayan opened the scoring for Barcelona, using his clever movement to get across his defender and slide in to finish Jordi Alba’s low cross.

While ?Barca won the first-leg match 3-0, Champions League glory wasn’t in their cards this season after blowing that same lead in Anfield just a week later.

9. Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona vs Manchester United)?

Philippe Coutinho didn’t enjoy the best first full season in La Liga but he did make his mark on the Champions League. The Brazilian’s goal against ?Manchester United was pure class, striking a powerful shot from outside the box past David de Gea.

The 26-year-old finished the competition with three goals and three assists but could not help his side from collapsing right before the final.

8. Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona vs Tottenham)??

?Another Barcelona player who may not have played the greatest season at the Camp Nou but can always create a highlight-worthy goal is 22-year-old Ousmane Dembele.

Dembele picked the ball up at the midfield line against ?Tottenham and drove with pace at the back four. After darting by Danny Rose, Dembele cut the ball back onto his left foot and slotted home behind Hugo Lloris, showing the potential the Frenchman has for the future.

7. Raheem Sterling (Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk)?

Raheem Sterling seems to have finally done away with the wayward finishing that has kept him out of the Premier League best player conversation for years. The 24-year-old took home the PFA Young Player of the Year award after leading Manchester City to a second-straight Premier League title.

Sterling’s brilliance wasn’t just fit for the ?Premier League as he bamboozled the Shakhtar Donetsk defence on his way to a fantastic individual goal in the Champions League. The Englishman twisted and turned in the box to avoid oncoming challenges before curling the ball into the far corner of the net.

6. Kylian Mbappe (Manchester United vs PSG)?

What can’t Kylian Mbappe do? At just 20-years-old, the Frenchman scored 39 goals and provided 17 assists for his Paris side this season, leading them to yet another Ligue 1 title.

In the Champions League, Mbappe did all he could to help the club avoid a shock exit at the hands of Manchester United. In the first leg of the fixure, the 20-year-old finished off a superb team-move, using his speed and finishing to slot home a low cross from the left side of the pitch.

5. Leroy Sane (Manchester City vs Hoffenheim)?

??On the final day of the group stages, Leroy Sane gave everyone a reason to jump out of their seats and cheer. At the end of the first-half with Manchester City down 1-0, Sane stepped up to take a freekick around 25-metres out. The German struck it beautifully, swerving the ball up into the top-right corner.

Sane has been linked with a move away from the Etihad in the summer with Bayern Munich keen on luring the 23-year-old back to his home country.

4. Ivan Rakitic (Tottenham vs Barcelona)?

Another player who may be on the move to another Champions League side in the summer is Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic. The Croatian has been vital to Barca’s success over the past few seasons and has produced some special goals in his time at the Camp Nou.

Rakitic’s strike against Tottenham stands out as one of his best, connecting perfectly with a jumping side-volley at the top of the box to stun Lloris and give Barça a 2-0 lead.

3. Sadio Mane (Bayern Munich vs Liverpool)?

After hoisting the trophy, you’d think Liverpool would have to have at least one goal in the top 10 of this season’s competition. Cue Sadio Mane against Bayern Munich.

In Liverpool’s biggest match of the season to that point, Virgil van Dijk knocked a ball in behind the Bayern back four in an attempt to find Mane. The 27-year-old made no mistake, bringing the ball down neatly before turning to chip Manuel Neuer while the German was well off his line.

2. Lionel Messi (Barcelona vs Liverpool)?

Lionel Messi completely dominated this season’s Champions League, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists for Barcelona in ten matches. The best of the Argentine’s goals this year came against Liverpool.

Messi stepped up and produced a trademark moment, all but knocking the eventual champions out of the tournament. From around 25-metres out, the 31-year-old curled the ball beyond Allison’s outstretched hand in the only place the Brazilian goalkeeper couldn’t reach.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus vs Manchester United)?

??Well, they may as well rename the competition to Cristiano’s Champions Leauge after the Portuguese attacker scored the best goal of the season yet again. In Ronaldo’s return to Manchester and his Juventus side tied 0-0, the 34-year-old let an ambitious ball fall over his shoulder and volleyed it first time past De Gea.

Ronaldo would go on to save Juventus in the round of 16 when they went down 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the first leg. A second-half hattrick from the five-time Champions League winner put the Italian side into the quarter-final where they would eventually lose to Ajax in thrilling fashion.

Women’s World Cup: 10 Big Stars to Keep an Eye Out for in France

?One of the best thing about the World Cup is that the brightest talents from around the globe all come together to showcase a few weeks of utterly stunning football, and the 2019 Women’s World Cup promises to be no different.

Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg may not be there, but there are still plenty of other incredible players who will compete for the world’s greatest prize this summer.

Here are ten huge names for you to keep an eye out for in France.

Marta (Brazil)

Marta Vieira da Silva

In France, there will arguably be no bigger star on show than Marta. The Brazilian is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, and she still knows how to strike fear into the hearts of any defender, despite being 33 years old.

Recent results have been nothing short of abysmal for Brazil, who are on a nine-game losing streak heading into the tournament. However, underestimate them – and Marta – at your own risk.

The all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup will be eyeing a few more before she hangs up her boots, and she will have to get through Australia, Italy and Jamaica to emerge victorious from Group C this summer.

Alex Morgan (USA)

Alex Morgan

As one of the favourites to bring home this summer’s Golden Boot award, all eyes will be on USWNT forward Alex Morgan.

The 29-year-old was huge for the USA as they finished 2018 unbeaten, leading her country’s scoring charts with 18 goals in all competitions. The team is currently first in FIFA’s world rankings, and Morgan has certainly played her part in reaching the summit.

Group F will pit Morgan and the USA against Thailand, Chile and Sweden, and Morgan will be desperate for a strong start to the competition as she looks to add another World Cup to her trophy cabinet.

?Sam Kerr (Australia)

Sam Kerr

When it comes to pure goal-scorers, there are few better around than Australia’s Sam Kerr. The Chicago Red Stars forward is one of the best in the business, and her third-placed finish in the 2018 Ballon d’Or voting proves it.

Kerr has broken records in both her native Australia and in the USA’s National Women’s Soccer League and, at 25 years old, she has plenty of time to shatter a few more.

This summer, the Matildas will come face to face with Brazil, Italy and Jamaica, in what will certainly be an exciting group.

?Lucy Bronze (England)

Lucy Bronze

To be a standout performer on such a globally dominant Lyon side is not an easy task, but Lucy Bronze somehow manages to do so.

The versatile full-back made her name in England, before making the jump to Lyon in 2017 after establishing herself? as one of the world’s finest in her position. Since then, she has won consecutive Division 1 Feminine and ?Champions League titles, as her stock continues to grow.

Bronze’s England side will begin their World Cup run in Group D, where they will meet Argentina, Japan and Scotland, and Bronze will be called upon to continue her run of dominant defensive performances this summer.

Fran Kirby (England)

Fran Kirby

After exploding on to the scene in 2014, Fran Kirby has never looked back. The ?Chelsea forward is a former PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year winner, and she has enjoyed plenty of success in recent seasons.

She became the first second-division player to be called up to the senior squad during her time with Reading, and was ?dubbed “mini-Messi” by former manager Mark Sampson after impressing at the 2015 World Cup.

Injury brought her run in the previous tournament to an abrupt end, so expect Kirby to try and make up for lost time when she lines up alongside Bronze in Group D this summer.

Eugénie Le Sommer (France)

FBL-WC-2019-FRA-JPN-WOMEN-FRIENDLY

?One of France’s most prolific players in history, 30-year-old forward Eugénie Le Sommer shows no signs of slowing down as she continues to dominate with Les Bleues and club side Lyon.

Often operating as either an attacking midfielder or second striker, Le Sommer knows how to wreak havoc on defenders, creating goals for both herself and her teammates with ease. With six Champions League and nine domestic league titles to her name, the France international is one of the game’s most successful talents.

As hosts of the tournament, France will kick off this summer’s action against South Korea in Group A. After that, they will clash with Nigeria and Norway, as they look to steal the show on home soil.

Wendie Renard (France)

FBL-EUR-C1-WOMEN-LYON-BARCELONA

Lining up alongside Le Sommer will be Lyon teammate Wendie Renard, who captains both her club and her country. The towering centre-back often stands out on the field, and her ability at the back makes her one of the most feared talents around.

She may be a defender, but she loves making an impact at the other end of the field. Her 6’2″ frame makes her a potent threat from set pieces, and she has used that to net an incredible 102 goals in 342 appearances for Lyon.? Those are the kind of numbers most strikers would be pleased with.

Renard is yet to lift the World Cup, but she will certainly feel capable of leading her side to glory this summer.

Lieke Martens (Netherlands)

Lieke Martens

The Netherlands come into the summer as one of the pre-tournament favourites, and fans will be looking to star forward Lieke Martens to carry them to success.

As a former Best FIFA Women’s Player award winner, Martens is no stranger to success. The 26-year-old, who has starred for ?Barcelona in recent years, was inspirational in the successful Euro 2017 campaign, and Martens will be looking for another impressive summer.

On paper, Group E looks to be one of the most exciting this summer. The Netherlands will face fellow high-flyers Canada, whilst New Zealand and Cameroon will also prove to be incredibly tough tests.

?Christine Sinclair (Canada)

Christine Sinclair

Leading Canada to glory will be the ultimate goal for Christine Sinclair, but her pursuit of the all-time international goalscoring record will certainly be in the back of her mind.

The 35-year-old has struck a stunning 181 goals for Canada throughout her career, which is just three behind former USA international Abby Wambach’s tally of 184. Sinclair is still at the top of her game, whilst her status as the team’s penalty taker will certainly help her chances of making history.

In Canada, she is heralded as an icon, and understandably so. She is just three goals away from becoming the most prolific international footballer, male or female, of all time.

?Dzsenifer Marozsán (Germany)

FBL-EUR-C1-WOMEN-LYON-BARCELONA

Yet again, we have another member of Lyon’s dominant club side. They have truly put together a stunning group of talented players, and midfielder ?Dzsenifer Marozsán is certainly one of those. Germany fought hard to seal her international allegiance, and it’s not hard to see why.

After setting the record for the youngest ever ?Bundesliga scorer when she was just 15 years old, Marozsán has gone from strength to strength. Plenty of individual honours followed, and they came thick and fast following her switch to Lyon in 2016.

She will compete in Group D against China, Spain and South Africa, and Marozsán will be keen to add yet another piece of silverware to her enormous trophy cabinet.

6 Possible Destinations for Eden Hazard if His Move to Real Madrid Doesn’t Go Through

?Eden Hazard is off, so long as Chelsea grant his wish and let him move to Real Madrid.

The deal has reportedly been in the works for months, and despite the man himself saying he’s leaving, we’re still yet to have an announcement from either club.

Chelsea and Real seem to be at a disagreement over the fee, and as long as the deal isn’t sealed, there’s always the chance it could fall through.

Just in case Hazard doesn’t get his dream move to the Spanish capital, we’ve analysed his other potential destinations and rated the likelihood of each move. Granted, none of them are particularly likely, but you just never know in football.

Juventus

Juventus v Atalanta BC - Serie A

Juventus seem to be linked with just about everyone these days, so we couldn’t create this list without throwing them in somewhere.

After all, the Italian champions are reportedly close to bringing in Chelsea boss ?Maurizio Sarri, and he may fancy bringing Hazard with him.

Although, in reality we all know Sarri will spend most his time trying to persuade Juventus chiefs not to sell Gonzalo Higuain.

Likelihood rating – 2/10

Bayern Munich

FBL-GER-BUNDESLIGA-BAYERN MUNICH-FRANKFURT

Bayern seriously need a winger or two with Robben and Ribery leaving, and wingers don’t come much better than Hazard.

However, paying around £100m for a 28-year-old isn’t really Bayern’s style. Expect them to go for a younger option a-la-Leroy Sane.

Likelihood Rating – 3/10

Manchester City

FBL-ENG-PR-MAN CITY-CHELSEA

It couldn’t happen, could it? Chelsea definitely wouldn’t fancy strengthening what is already the strongest team in England, but if the Real transfer does collapse Pep Guardiola would surely be tempted to make a move. After all, ?City did try to bring Hazard to the Etihad while he was still at Lille.

Guardiola has generally targeted younger players since taking the reins at City though, so whether the club would be willing to break their transfer record for a player who will be 30 in two years is another question.

Either way, it’s got more chance of happening than a move to United, unless Hazard fancies having another crack at the Europa League next season.

Likelihood Rating – 3/10

Barcelona

Eden Hazard,Sergio Busquets

This move actually makes a fair amount of sense on paper. ?Barcelona have failed to truly replace Neymar since he left for PSG, with Phillipe Coutinho being a bit of a flop and Ousmane Dembele prioritising video games over his football career.

The Catalans are constantly linked with bringing Neymar back to Spain, but Hazard would certainly present a more cost-effective option on the left wing, while still adding world-class quality. However, there simply isn’t much linking the two.

Though if Barça fancy really riling up Real this summer, a move for Hazard would certainly do the job.

Likelihood Rating – 6/10

Paris Saint-Germaine

Eden Hazard,Angel Di Maria

If Neymar does end up leaving Paris, then the Ligue 1 champions will need to find a replacement.

Hazard plays in the same position and is one of the best around, so he certainly ticks all the boxes. PSG are also loaded, so paying the fee Chelsea desire surely wouldn’t be a problem.

The real question is whether Hazard fancies waltzing to Ligue 1 and bottling it in the ?Champions League each year.

Likelihood rating – 7/10

Chelsea

FBL-EUR-C3-CHELSEA-ARSENAL-FINAL

Yes, he’s said he’s off, but hear me out.

If ?Chelsea and ?Real can’t agree on a fee, there’s actually a fairly good chance of Hazard staying in west London. He clearly has a strong connection to the club, and no other side has really been firmly linked with a move for the Belgian. He does still have a year left on his deal, and it would complete a huge about-face.

Of course, this all depends on the very big if of the two clubs not coming to a deal.

We can still dream, Chelsea fans.

Likelihood Rating – 8/10

Valencia Confirm Interest in Arsenal Flop Denis Suarez With Barcelona Looking to Offload Spaniard

?Valencia have confirmed Denis Suarez is among their summer transfer targets as the La Liga outfit look to reinforce their squad ahead of another season in elite European competition.

Suarez spent the second half of the season on loan at Arsenal from parent club Barcelona, but failed to make any impact with just six substitute appearances for the Gunners.

Denis Suárez

?Arsenal had the option to make Suarez’s deal permanent for £18m this summer, but will choose against do so after a largely anonymous six-month stint in north London. ?Barcelona are still keen to sell the player, however, and one of the more likely destinations for the 25-year-old appears to be Valencia – after the club’s general director Mateu Alemany confirmed that Suarez was on the club’s shortlist.

“Our obligation is to be in the market, that list can be very long and Denis Suarez would be one of them,” he said, via ??Football London?.

Before joining Unai Emery’s outfit in January, Suarez penned a one-year extension on his Barcelona deal so La Blaugrana could protect their likelihood of earning a respectable transfer fee if he did not join the Gunners.

Suarez has been on the books at the Camp Nou side since 2016, in what is his second spell at the club, and has netted eight times in 71 senior appearances for the Spanish giants.

Los Ches secured ?Champions League football for the third successive season after a fourth place finish in ?La Liga and are eager to bolster their ranks. They could face competition from Serie A side Napoli, however, who held an interest in Suarez back in January and may revive a move for the playmaker.

FIFA 19: Ranking the New La Liga Team of the Season Cards

?It’s week number three of FIFA 19’s Team of the Season (TOTS) for Europe’s major leagues, and this time it’s the biggest and best players from La Liga which have been given major upgrades.

Unsurprisingly, Barcelona dominate the list of the 20 boosted cards available in packs after winning their 26th La Liga title, with two cards available through Weekly Objectives and another through a Squad Builder Challenge.

So here’s a quick rundown of every player featured in the ?La Liga Team of the Season, as well as a 90min rating to see if these players are actually value for money upon release.

Jan Oblak (GK)

Jan Oblak

Few can argue about the inclusion of ?Atletico Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak, who enjoyed another fabulous season for Los Rojiblancos.

His 20 clean sheets in La Liga couldn’t be bettered by any other goalkeeper in the division, with his form throughout the campaign already earning him two TOWT cards. At a reasonable price as well, he’s a certainty for any defence based around Spain’s top tier.

Price: 255,000

90min Rating: 9/10

Gerard Pique (CB)

Gerard Pique

The first of many ?Barcelona players to feature on this list, ?Gerard Pique has earned himself a considerable upgrade with his TOTS card.

It’s an upgrade that see’s the Spaniard pace increase considerably, which is usually his only flaw in the game, meaning there are few better centre-backs in the game to have this season.

Price: 350,000

90min Rating: 7/10

Jordi Alba (LB)?

Jordi Alba

Few would’ve been surprised by the inclusion of Jordi Alba in La Liga’s TOTS, after being the standout left-back in the division during 2018/19.

The speed merchant is just about covered in every major attribute, as would be expected with such a considerable boost, which is why the defender is such a popular choice for so many players.

Price: 470,000

90min Rating: 8/10

Jesus Navas (RWB)

FBL-ESP-LIGA-GETAFE-SEVILLA

Enjoying a career renaissance as a right wing-back for Sevilla, Jesus Navas has more than earned his spot in La Liga’s TOTS.

In what is the 33-year-old’s first upgrade on FIFA 19, the stats means that Navas is better suited to being a wing-back rather than a full-back – namely due to his 48 strength – but is a more than useful squad player to have.

Price: 150,000

90min Rating: 7/10

Dakonam Djene (CB)

FBL-ESP-CUP-GETAFE-VALENCIA

Getafe were one of the stories of the season, as they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification – and Dakonam Djene played a major part in their memorable season.

The 27-year-old has been rewarded with a TOTS card, with the 90 pace a particular standout for the defend, while his 5’9″ height is made up for with his 96 jumping.

Price: 194,000

90min Rating: 7/10

Pablo Sarabia (CM)

FBL-ESP-LIGA-SEVILLA-ALAVES

One of the standout players on this season’s game, Pablo Sarabia has managed to better his ‘Headliner’ card with a TOTS equivalent.

Despite being positioned as a central midfielder, the 27-year-old’s stats – draw attention to shooting, passing and dribbling – does lend itself to a shift further forward in order to reap the benefits of this card.

Price: 303,000

90min Rating: 8/10

Dani Parejo (CM)

Dani Parejo,King Felipe VI

The captain of this season’s Copa del Rey winners, Valencia’s Dani Parejo has been rewarded with his own TOTS card to play at the heart of anyone’s midfield.

Technically gifted yes, the two issues surrounding the 30-year-old is his 60 pace and low defensive work-rate in an otherwise perfectly acceptable card, especially considering the price.

Price: 100,000

90min Rating: 6/10

Sergio Canales (CM)

Sergio Canales,Jose Gaya

Despite Real Betis’ tenth-place finish, central midfielder Sergio Canales did enough to earn his first upgrade of the season, which has come in some style.

The 28-year-old is equipped well for sides who prefer a more measured approach to attacking, while Canales’ 90 for finishing and long shots means he can take a chance should one present itself.

Price: 80,000

90min Rating: 7/10

Luis Suarez (ST)

Luis Suarez

Matters in the final third now, and we begin with La Liga’s runner-up in the goalscoring charts in the shape of ?Luis Suarez.

As would be expected with the upgrade, the 32-year-old flourishes in every facet of the game, although with his 95-rated UCL Live card available for less than half the price of his TOTS card, perhaps your coins are better off going there.

Price: 2,499,000

90min Rating: 7/10

Lionel Messi (RW)

FBL-ESP-LIGA-BARCELONA-EIBAR

He was never not going to have a TOTS card, let’s be honest.

?Lionel Messi’s 99-rated card is his THIRD in this season’s instalment of the game alone, and is his most expensive version as a right winger.

His 99-rated CL TOTT card is over 1,000,000 coins less, with only his pace and physical stats suffering any notable drop, so you can save yourself some coins if you’re in the market for a game-changer.

Price: 3,619,000

90min Rating: 7/10

Karim Benzeman (ST)

FBL-ESP-LIGA-REAL MADRID-BILBAO

?The only ?Real Madrid player to earn a TOTS card was striker ?Karim Benzema, and it’s fair to say it’s a pretty impressive one.

Above 90 in five of the six main attributes – his 43 defence being the exception – the 31-year-old appears to be the man to lead your La Liga team, especially considering he’s almost 1,000,000 coins cheaper than Suarez’s TOTS card.

Price: 1,528,000

90min Rating: 8/10

BENCH

?Marc-Andre ter Stegen (119,000) – Considerably cheaper than Oblak yes, but only betters the Slovenian when it comes to kicking/distribution.

Mario Hermoso (123,000) – Has 91-rated pace to deal with the vast majority of speed merchants, combined with the physical attributes to be a shrewd selection as a centre-back.

Santi Cazorla (179,000) – Great to see the Spaniard return to the peak of his powers, with his qualities on the ball unquestionable.

Ever Banega (74,000) – A shadow card upgrade away from being a very handy central midfielder.

Antoine Griezmann (2,900,000) – The quality is there – he’s a 97-rated card after all – but you’ll certainly need to save up for him.

Iago Aspas (419,000) – Comparable to Griezmann in stature as well as stats, yet is seven times cheaper and could be the alternative to those eyeing up the World Cup winner.

Borja Iglesias (88,000) – A useful focal point, but nothing to get too excited about.

Wissam Ben Yedder (1,805,000) – Pace, finishing and stamina in abundance, the Frenchman is the definition of an Ultimate Team striker.

?Ousmane Dembele (1,198,000) – That’s the kind of upgrade eight goals and five assists in a single La Liga season gets you these days.

Valencia left-back Jose Gaya and Girona striker Christian Stuani are available through Weekly Objectives.

Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin available through a Squad Builder Challenge.

Prices are accurate at the time of writing.

Lionel Messi Admits He Wants to Win Titles With Argentina Before He Retires Ahead of Copa America

?Lionel Messi has admitted he wants to win titles with the Argentina national team before the end of his career ahead of this summer’s Copa America.

The Barcelona forward endured a disappointing end to the season with his club outfit as the Catalans crashed out of the Champions League at the semi final stage before losing to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

However, ?Barcelona did retain their La Liga crown and ?Messi has the chance to add further silverware to his glittering record over the summer when he leads Argentina in the Copa America.

The 31-year-old is yet to win a major honour with Argentina and, as quoted by ?Ole, Messi told Fox Sports: “I want to finish my career and win something with the national team or try as many times as possible.

“I want to get up, try again, it is the message for children who like to see me.

“That’s life, stumble and get back up and fight for your dreams. One does everything possible, but it is God who decides whether that will be for one or not. He will decide what is best for me, for us. God has the last word.

“People see that the national team is continually killed, with comments that despise the players, that kill all the players and people get into that too.

“People also asked for the change of the generation. It was true that a change should have been made.

RIP José Antonio Reyes: Football World Extends Sympathies for Former Arsenal & Sevilla Star

?Clubs, players and fans across the world have come together to pay tribute to former Spain international winger José Antonio Reyes, who passed away ?aged 35 following a car crash in his hometown of Utrera.

Reyes’ boyhood club Sevilla confirmed the news on social media on Saturday.

??Breaking through into Sevilla’s first team aged 16, Reyes quickly became a fan favourite in Andalusia before securing a €20m move to Arsenal during the January transfer window in 2004.

His involvement in Arsène Wenger’s Invincibles side saw him become the first Spanish player to ever win the Premier League title. Reyes made a serious impact on fans during his time in north London, making over 100 appearances for the club before returning to Spain in 2006.

A number of Reyes’ former teammates at Highbury have also expressed their sympathies on social media, including members of Arsenal’s Invincibles.

??

His former roommate at Arsenal, Cesc Fabregas, paid his tribute to Reyes on Instagram, posting a touching message with a collection of pictures from their time together in north London.

My first great friend in the world of professional football, my roommate, who always wanted to sleep with the air conditioning even at -10 degrees,” Fabregas wrote. “A humble guy who always had a smile on his face, great footballer and great person.

“I could not wake up today in a worse way. I will never forget when you and your family welcomed me at your home on my first Christmas in England when I was alone and was 16 years old.

“Two days ago I was talking about you in an interview, it might be a sign, who knows, to remember you, my great friend. I will never forget you, we will never forget you. Always in our hearts. Rest in peace, Jose Antonio Reyes. Love you very much.”

Reyes went on to enjoy spells with Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid when he first returned to Spain, eventually going on to return to Sevilla – via Benfica – where he was involved in the club’s historic three consecutive Europa League titles.

He eventually left the club in 2016, having 242 appearances for his boyhood side, where he scored 37 goals and claimed the same amount of assists.

After spending some time in China with Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard, Reyes returned to join Spanish second division side Extremadura UD.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have confirmed matches that were due to be played this weekend in the Segunda División, including Extremadura’s game against Cádizhave been postponed until Tuesday.

Clubs around Europe are all ready to dive in head first into the sea of transfers, with their pockets stuffed with more money than you can ever imagine.

Here are seven more stories for you to look out for this summer.

West Ham ‘Hold Talks’ Over £16m Move for Olympiacos Star Kostas Fortounis

FBL-EUR-C3-OLYMPIAKOS-MILAN

After a strong end to last season, ?West Ham are eager to get started on their summer business, but the latest man to be linked with the club might leave fans scratching their heads.

That’s because, according to ?The Sun, West Ham are keen to tie up a £16m deal for Olympiacos midfielder Kostas Fortounis, who has spent all but three years of his career playing in Greece.

After being quoted too much in their pursuit of ?Barcelona’s ?Andre Gomes, the Hammers have been forced to look elsewhere. The 26-year-old did manage 17 goals and 16 assists this season, but chances are you’re not alone if you haven’t heard of him.

Eliaquim Mangala Emerges as Transfer Target for Former Club Porto as Man City Prepare Defensive Overhaul

Eliaquim Mangala

Come on then, hands up who didn’t even remember ?Eliaquim Mangala was still a ?Manche?ster City player.

In Mangala’s defence, it’s not his fault he fell off the face of the earth. A serious knee injury sidelined the Frenchman in February 2018, and he has not been seen since. You get the feeling his days at the Etihad Stadium are numbered, and ?Sky Sports claim that Porto are interested in bringing the 28-year-old back for a second spell at the club.

?With ?Vincent Kompany on his way out and Nicolas Otamendi thought to be nearing the exit door, City only want to sign one more centre-back, but they’ve probably forgotten that Mangala is still on their books. It’d probably be in everyone’s best interest if he moved on this summer.

Elseid Hysaj Confirms Napoli Departure Amid Links to Chelsea

Elseid Hysaj

Back in the day, ?Chelsea used to be perpetually linked to the likes of ?Lionel Messi, Radamel Falcao and ?Edinson Cavani. Nowadays, it’s ?Napoli man Elseid Hysaj. Sigh.

Speaking to DigitAlb (via ?Gianluca Di Marzio), the right-back confirmed that he will leave Naples this summer, insisting that he wants to join a team who can win trophies. His next move is currently unknown, although he has long been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge to link up with Maurizio Sarri again.

A word of advice – don’t mention this man’s name on Twitter. Chelsea fans, without ever seeing him play, already do not want him around as he would push the future Ballon d’Or winner that is Reece James down the pecking order, and they won’t hesitate to tell you.

Tottenham End Interest in Barcelona’s Andre Gomes Amid Concerns of High Transfer Fee

Andre Gomes

Andre Gomes played his way back into relevancy whilst on loan with ?Everton last season, although his future still remains away from Camp Nou.

La Blaugrana want up to £35m for Gomes, but ?Sky Sports claim that eternal penny-pinchers ?Tottenham Hotspur are not prepared to pay that, so they have ended their interest.

You have to feel for Spurs. Having transfer-phobia is no laughing matter. Although, they probably need to sign someone soon, and then maybe not wait 18 months to follow that up. Just a suggestion.

James Rodriguez to Clash With Real Madrid Over Desire to Move to Serie A

James Rodriquez

?James Rodriguez will almost certainly be one of the most high-profile casualties of Zinedine Zidane’s squad overhaul this summer, but it seems like finding a deal which would please both parties is easier said than done.

According to ?Marca, ?Real Madrid want to sell him to the ?Premier League, because clubs there can offer that sweet, sweet cash. Unfortunately, there is one key problem, and that is that the midfielder intends to reject any advances from England.

He wants to move to ?Serie A, with ?Juventus and Napoli thought to be incredibly keen on signing him. It seems like Los Blancos are ready to talk to anyone who is ready to throw money their way, so now it’s over to James.

Antonio Conte Ready to Axe Mauro Icardi as Part of Inter Rebuild

Mauro Icardi

Now, if there is one thing Antonio Conte is good at, it’s politely and respectfully asking strikers to leave the club, just ask ?Diego Costa.

?La Gazzetta dello Sport state that Conte is up to his old tricks again with new employers ?Inter, and he is ready to cut ties with striker ?Mauro Icardi, over concerns that his personality, and his wife Wanda Nara, are detrimental to the club’s future.?

They specifically state that Conte does not want to deal with “sexy poses on social media”, and instead wants players who are only focused on the club. That’s fine, but maybe don’t send a text this time.

Bruno Fernandes Saga Takes Another Turn as Man Utd Become ‘Frontrunners’ in Race for Sporting CP Star

FBL-POR-LIGA-SPORTING-PORTIMONENSE

Did you know both Manchester City and ?Manchester United want Bruno Fernandes? If only there had been 1,000 reports about the whole situation, I bet people wouldn’t be tired of that at all…

In the latest edition of ‘We Don’t Know What Is Going to Happen’, ?A Bola state that it is United who have moved ahead of their cross-town rivals in their pursuit of the Sporting CP man.

City are ready to offer €55m and some players, but United could offer up to €80m on its own. They could offer some players themselves, but Sporting probably don’t want any of them. I can’t imagine Sporting fighting to get Ashley Young included in this deal.

Matthijs de Ligt to Make Man Utd Decision ‘in Coming Days’ as Frenzied Speculation Continues

?Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt is thought to have told Manchester United to expect a decision from him about a potential move to Old Trafford in the near future.

The Dutchman has been the subject of serious interest from Barcelona for what seems like an eternity, but recent reports have suggested that ?United are very much in the race for his signature.

This latest update in the transfer saga comes from ?The Telegraph, who state that De Ligt will tell ?United “in the coming days” whether he would be willing to join them, even without ?Champions League football next season.

Club officials are said to believe that the 19-year-old has already agreed a deal with ?Barcelona, but they are eager to take advantage of any hesitation to try and lure De Ligt to Old Trafford instead.

There has been plenty of speculation as to why Barcelona are yet to confirm a deal for De Ligt, with the ?centre-back’s wage demands the latest suggestion. If De Ligt has any uncertainty over a move to Barcelona, then United want to do all they can to convince him that a move to England would be better for his career.

The Telegraph add that many in the Netherlands believe that De Ligt should join United over Barcelona, as ?Premier League football would be better for his development at this stage in his career.

United’s imminent rebuild is said to be an appealing prospect for De Ligt, who has already been part of a similar project with Ajax in recent seasons. He would be one of the first names on the team sheet at Old Trafford, but there are doubts over whether he would be offered a similar role with Barcelona.

The Blaugrana see him as the perfect long-term replacement for Gerard Pique and, whilst De Ligt is intrigued by such a role, he also knows that Pique’s career benefited from a spell with United earlier in his career.

Gerard Pique

Pique spent four years with the Red Devils between 2004 and 2008, before ultimately moving back to Camp Nou to take up a place in the first team.

The report claims that a similar career path is being considered by De Ligt, who knows that he still has enough time in his career to turn out for both clubs if he wishes to do so, but he has ?insisted that no decision will be made until after the UEFA Nations League comes to an end this summer.

Let’
