Ballon d’Or 2019: Full Golden Ball Rankings as Lionel Messi Scoops Award

Lionel Messi has only gone and won his sixth Ballon d’Or, the most of any player in the history of football.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to claim the Argentine is not the greatest footballer of all time, with his phenomenal stats in 2019 proving his is worthy of this year’s Golden Ball. In 54 appearances for club and country, the little magician has scored 46 goals and grabbed 17 assists, despite struggling with injuries.

Virgil Van Dijk

Those figures mean Messi beats Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk to the big prize, while Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo has lost another battle with his foe, the Portuguese coming third in the rankings.

Van Dijk is joined by several Reds teammates towards the top of the list, as Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Alisson all make the top seven.

Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez finished ninth and tenth, respectively, with fellow Sky Blues representatives Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne also featuring.

The later pair sandwich either Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard, while other places in the top 20 were claimed by Matthijs de Ligt, Sergio Aguero, Roberto Firmino, Antoine Griezmann, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who shared the Premier League Golden Boot with 22 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Incredibly, Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris features above Barcelona stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, while 2019 Golden Boot winner Joao Felix, now playing for Atletico Madrid, ties in 28th place with Marquinhos and Donny van de Beek.

We’ll be updating with results as they come – so hang with us!

Ballon d’Or 2019: Barcelona’s Lionel Messi Wins Record Breaking 6th Golden Ball Award

?Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or for a record breaking sixth time after an astonishing 2019 for the GOAT.

The Argentine has been in phenomenal form since returning from injury in September, scoring 11 times and grabbing eight assists for La Blaugrana. He was equally influential for Ernesto Valverde’s men last term, with Messi’s 73 goal-involvements during 2018/19 helping Barça to a fourth La Liga title in five years.

Club Atletico de Madrid v FC Barcelona - La Liga

Though Virgil van Dijk has been a colossal figure in ?Liverpool’s backline, both he and Cristiano Ronaldo were overlooked by voters, the pair finishing second and third in the standings respectively.

Fellow Reds stars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah placed fourth and fifth, whilse the side’s goalkeeper Alisson came in seventh, having won the Yachine Trophy earlier in the evening.

Messi and Ronaldo were the only two players to win the Ballon d’Or between 2008 and 2017, but Luka Modric’s immaculate displays for ?Real Madrid and Croatia saw him clinch the award last year.

There have been several unforgettable moments for the South American this calendar year, including scoring his 600th goal for Barcelona with a mesmerising free-kick in the first leg of the club’s ?Champions League semi final meeting with Liverpool.

His glorious chipped goal versus Real Betis in March saw Messi named as runner-up in the FIFA Puskas Award, though no one was able to stop him winning the Best Male Player prize at the ceremony in Milan.

Twitter Reacts as Lionel Messi Strikes Late to Sink Atletico Madrid

?It’s almost as if he knows it’s Ballon d’Or season.

??Lionel Messi has now hit a ridiculous nine goals in his last six La Liga games, after coming up trumps for ?Barcelona once again to see off Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night.

It was far from the best game you’ll see this season, with ?Atletico getting the better of the first half and Barça edging the second, but there wasn’t much to separate the two as the game entered the dying stages.

Well… there was Messi.

The Argentine number ten, seeing the scores still level in the final five minutes, drove forward into the Atleti half, and played a one-two with his partner in crime Luis Suarez.

Receiving the return ball on the edge of the area, the little magician stroked a deft effort beyond the despairing Jan Oblak, sparking scenes of jubilation in the visiting ranks as they returned to the top of the division ahead of Real Madrid – who had beaten Alaves on Saturday.

??

The win was ground-out by Barça, and wasn’t without its controversy. Plenty of on-lookers felt Gerard Pique merited a second booking.

The central defender was earlier booked for a rugby tackle on Joao Felix, and walked the tight-rope throughout the second half, some feeling he was given an easier ride by officials since he was already on a booking.

??Messi was the goalscorer, but there was another man fans felt were an unsung hero.

??

??

??Ultimately, the win sends Barcelona back to the top of La Liga despite a testing start to the season. Not bad for a club in crisis.

Atlético Madrid 0-1 Barcelona: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Late Messi Magic Saves the Day (Again)

The combination of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez once again proved to be the undoing of Atletico Madrid, as the latter assisted the former to inflict a damaging late defeat on Diego  Simeone’s men at a wet Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night.

The home side started the brighter of the two, with central defender Mario Hermoso proving to be the unlikely attacking threat. The number 22 saw his fizzed low cross deflect off the far post, before forcing an unbelievable stop out of Marc-Andre ter Stegen from close range, leaving ?Barcelona counting themselves lucky to be level after 20 minutes.

The visitors’ game-plan seemed to centre around grinding down and simply out-lasting their more bushy-tailed hosts, and as the first half wore on, there were one or two signs that strategy was beginning to work.

Ivan Rakitic,Mario Hermoso

The game was being played at a quick tempo, but aside from a hectic opening 20 minutes that had the visitors on the ropes, the teams cancelled each other out well, and it developed into an intriguing tactical encounter that really flipped the script with what we’ve come to expect from each over the years.

?Atleti played on the front foot, while Barca sat off, though they did see a good deal of the ball as the game went on.

Frenkie De Jong

With the game as tight as it was into the latter stages of the second half, it became increasingly apparent that any moment of real quality could decide it; and when you’re up against a side that has Messi and Suarez in that type of game, you’re in trouble.

And so it proved for Atletico, as the little Argentine drove forward and played a patented one-two with the Uruguayan, before stroking a devastating left-footed finish past Oblak on 85 minutes to call game, and put Barcelona back on top of the tree.

?Atletico Madrid

Key Talking Point

Luis Suarez

18 league games without a win against Barcelona says it all about Atletico’s La Liga fortunes against the defending champions. For love nor money, they just have not been able to force a result against Ernesto Valverde’s men.

Add into the mix their inconsistent start to the season, then, and you might have understood why Atleti would have been less than confident of a win. Still, they sat three points behind their visitors at the start of play, and a win would have reignited their faltering title challenge.

Though they started like a side intent on getting that elusive result, though, they were worn down by a rigid, resolute Barcelona performance, and were eventually undone, to no shame of their own, by Lionel Messi.

It was a performance which Diego Simeone might have been ok with but, in the bigger picture, his side have won just three in the last 12 La Liga games…

Player Ratings

Starting XI: Oblak (7); Trippier (6), Felipe (6), Hermoso (7), Saul (6); Correa (5), Thomas (6), Herrera (7), Koke (6); Felix (6), Morata (7)

Subs: Vitolo (6), Lemar (6)

Star Man – Mario Hermoso

Manning the inside channel occupied by Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez,  while frequently covering for a midfielder being played out of position as a make-shift left-back? No problem.

His side’s defensive unit might have been undone by a bit of Messi magic in the end, but over the piece this was as good an individual defensive performance as you will see in La Liga this season.

Barcelona

Key Talking Point

Though their recent record against Atleti has been favourable, Barcelona were seven games  without a win at Wanda Metropolitano heading into this one. Far from the perfect venue for a side looking to keep their head above water after a decent recent run eased a unit or two of the pressure on their under-fire manager, then.

Ernesto Valverde

They had won four matches on the spin since that heavily-criticised stalemate with Sparta Praha, and knew that a win here would have put them back on top of the tree in La Liga, after  Real Madrid had beaten Alaves to retake top spot 24 hours earlier.

Ultimately, in doing so, they were far from at their fluent best. But at one of the most difficult grounds in world football, any win would have done.

One side had Messi and the other didn’t, and that, as it so often does, proved to be the difference on the day. And come the end of the season, that may once again prove to be the ultimate deciding factor.

Subs: Vidal (6), Umtiti (6)

Star Man – Gerard Pique

He was rough, he was tumble, and he was toeing the line of a red card for much of the second half, but Gerard Pique’s influence over the Barcelona defence cannot be overstated.

Up against Alvaro Morata, the experienced centre-half was never going to be in for an easy evening, but he managed to limit the target man to a quiet performance and made sure his side left with a clean sheet, even if they were far from at their best.

Looking Ahead

Atletico Madrid travel to face Villarreal on Friday, before Champions League action returns midweek, as they look to make sure of  their place in the last 16 with a victory over Lokomotiv Moscow.

Barcelona, meanwhile, head back to Camp Nou to face Real Zaragoza, before taking on Inter – although they won’t be overly concerned about that having already won Group F.

Ballon d’Or Rankings ‘Leaked’ on Social Media Ahead of Monday’s Award Ceremony

Images appearing to ‘leak’ the results of voting for Ballon d’Or 2019 have emerged on Twitter, showing Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the clear winner.

Voting for the annual award has long-since been concluded, and official confirmation of the winner will be announced on Monday at France Football’s award ceremony in Paris.

It’s expected to be a two-horse race between Barcelona’s ?Lionel Messi and Liverpool’s ?Virgil van Dijk, and the alleged leaks, coming via Twitter user @BarcaUniversal, corroborate that expectation.

The image shows Messi as the clear winner, with 446 votes to Van Dijk’s 382, while the Dutchman’s Liverpool counterpart ?Mohamed Salah comes in third on 179 votes.

It’s as yet unclear just how much substance there is to the leak. The document is said to have come from an ‘anonymous source’, and with no definitive indication that it is official, it could easily have been faked simply to generate engagement.

But having said that, if the results did end up being correct, it would come as no real surprise. Messi is expected to win the award after following up a stellar 2018/19 season with ten goals in 13 appearances for Barcelona.

Lionel Messi,Griezmann

Van Dijk, meanwhile – whose immeasurable defensive influence drove Liverpool to becoming champions of Europe last season – has seen his performances drop off ever-so-slightly, granting Messi the initiative.

He would be a worthy winner if he was to upset the apple-cart, however. His side lost just one league game in the 2018/19 campaign, and have started 2019/20 with a bang, sitting 11 points clear of defending champions Manchester City at the 14 game mark.

The same could be said for Salah and Sadio Mané, who each hold positions in the top five according to the leak, either side of Cristiano Ronaldo – the four-time winner set for his lowest ranking since 2010 start to life at Juventus that is indifferent by his own standards.

Ernesto Valverde Insists Antoine Griezmann Is Ready Hostile Reception in Atletico Madrid Return

?Ernesto Valverde has insisted that Antoine Griezmann will be ready for what is set to be an extremely hostile environment at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Frenchman returns to Atletico after leaving the club for a massive fee of £110m in the summer, and it is likely that he will be on the receiving end of a lot of stick from fans.

Speaking to the press, Valverde said (via ?Mundo Deportivo): “Whatever you say, I can’t change how people behave with Griezmann. He left there, some will be valued and others not. We are used to harsh environments.”

Antoine Griezmann

The ?Barca manager also spoke about how he expects the game to play out, while also revealing how ?Ousmane Dembélé is feeling after his thigh injury which ruled him out for 10 weeks.

“In both games in the Metropolitano, ?Atlético went ahead and we had to go back and draw,” he said. “The two games followed the same pattern, we dominated, but they hurt us on the break. It is possible that the script is repeated. They defend well, together, but when they attack they hurt many players. It will be exciting.

“Atletico forces mistakes from you a lot with high pressure and we will need some patience to look for holes and cover what we have behind. They will run a lot, we will have to do it and the technical part will also be important.

“The importance of the game is for two reasons, first to regain the leadership and then for the morale we will have from here until the end of the year. Whoever wins will experience a very important high. It is a game in which you have to play [for] it.”

Ousmane Dembele

On Dembélé“I have spoken with Dembélé, now he is calmer. After the game he was very affected. It is a very important loss for us because of the player he is and for the time he will be out. He was fine, emotionally very upset because he had been working well.

“It was hard for him to get used to Barça, but now he was training well. We will have players from the subsidiary, who have done well when we called them “

Valverde was also asked about the upcoming Ballon d’Or, and his view on the award and who should win it. He responded: “I don’t follow the Golden Ball galas a lot because they are quite long. If you give it to the best, you give it to ?Messi and everything is solved”.

Barca take on Atletico on Sunday at 20:00, and a win for Valverde’s men will mean that they leapfrog Real Madrid to top spot in La Liga.

Let’

Atletico Madrid & Barcelona Combined XI Ahead of Crucial La Liga Clash

The La Liga title race is the tightest it has been in years, and excitingly two title rivals meet at Estadio Metropolitano on Sunday evening as Atletico Madrid host Barcelona.

With just three points separating the two sides, Sunday’s result could have huge ramifications for the destination of the La Liga ?title.

?Barcelona will return to the league summit with victory, while ?Atletico will draw level on points with Sunday’s opponents if they come out on top.

And in addition to all the title race frenzy, Antoine Griezmann will return to Atletico for the first time since his controversial summer switch to Barcelona.

But does Griezmann make the cut in 90min’s combined Atletico and Barcelona XI? Let’s take a look…

Goalkeepers and Defenders

Jan Oblak

?Jan Oblak (GK) – Selecting Jan Oblak over Marc-Andre ter Stegen was a tough call, but Oblak edges into the combined XI by the skin of his teeth. The Slovenian has won the Zamora Trophy four years on the trot – the award for the lowest goals per game ratio. It helps that Oblak is playing behind a much more defensively sound side than ter Stegen, but for his sheer consistency since arriving in La Liga, Oblak has the slight advantage.

Kieran Trippier (RB) – The Englishman surprised fans when he swapped north London for Madrid this summer, but it had paid off as the right back has recaptured the form that saw him become such an integral part of England’s surge to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. His delivery has always been superb, but he has added a steeliness and bite to his game in Spain, constantly topping the tackles per game charts.

Clement Lenglet (CB) – In a Barcelona backline that has been plagued by injuries and question marks over form, Lenglet has been the one constant this season. The Frenchman is assured and intelligent, and is fast becoming one of the best central defenders in the world. To be such a consistent figure in the heart of the Barcelona defence at just 24 is remarkable.

Jose Gimenez (CB) – Another tough choice, with Barcelona’s Gerard Pique and Atletico’s Felipe also in the mix. However, Pique is not quite the player he was, and Gimenez just about gets the nod over his Atletico teammate Felipe. Giminez has filled the void left by fellow countryman Diego Godin, with his tenacity and awareness helping make Atletico the solid defensive unit that they are.

Renan Lodi (LB) – With Jordi Alba injured, the left back spot in this combined XI was wide open. Lodi gets the nod over Barcelona’s Junior Firpo, who is yet to set the world alight during his brief appearances for the Catalan side. Much like Kieran Trippier on the other flank, there was never any questions over Lodi’s ability going forward, but the summer signing has come on leaps and bounds defensively under the tutelage of Diego Simeone.

Midfielders

UEFA Champions League"FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund"

Frenkie de Jong (CM) – The supremely gifted young Dutch midfielder has found his feet after a quiet first month in Barcelona. Intelligent, creative and skilful, De Jong would walk into this combined XI based on his passing ability alone.

Saul Niguez (CM) – The Atletico academy product goes slightly under the radar, but does an invaluable job for his side, dictating the play from the middle of the park. His energy is remarkable, and he is just as effective at breaking up play as he is picking out a pass.

?Arthur (CM) – Choosing between Arthur and Koke was yet another tight call, but the young Brazilian just about takes it. He is mesmerising to watch, with his quick feet and ability to see the pass the no one else can. Alongside De Jong, Barcelona are in safe hands in midfield for many years to come.

Forwards

Lionel Messi,Luis Suarez

Lionel Messi (RW) – One of the easier decisions in this combined XI. What can you say about ?Lionel Messi that has not already been said a thousand times over? The little magician can change a game in a flash and score from seemingly anywhere, regardless of how tight the angle or how many players he is required to wriggle through. ?As ever, his goal scoring statistics continue to defy logic.

Joao Felix (LW) – Antoine Griezmann’s replacement at Atletico also replaces him in this combined XI. While the Frenchman has underwhelmed since his summer move, Felix has dazzled with his flair and natural ability. The 20-year-old is the type of player you cannot wait to see get on the ball.

Luis Suarez (ST) – With Diego Costa injured, this is an easier selection than it might have been. After a quiet start to the season by his standards, Suarez is proving critics wrong with seven goals in his last 11 appearances. The Uruguayan is just as relentless and tiresome as he is phenomenally talented, making him an absolute nightmare for defenders.

Predicting Barcelona’s Starting XI for La Liga Clash Against Atlético Madrid

Barcelona return to La Liga action on Sunday as they face Atlético Madrid ?in a monumental clash at the top of the table.

The Catalan side have been imperious in the league so far this season but find themselves second in La Liga, three points ahead of Atlético and three below Real Madrid, who beat Alaves 2-1 on Saturday.

A 3-1 Champions League win over German opponents Borussia Dortmund followed in midweek, and Ernesto Valverde will be hoping his team can replicate that performance against Atlético on Sunday.

Frenkie de Jong,Lionel Messi,Antoine Griezmann,Luis Suarez

Barcelona cannot afford any slip ups in their hunt for their 27th La Liga title. With that said, here’s the team Barcelona should field on Sunday.

Goalkeepers & Defenders

Gerard Pique

Marc-André ter Stegen (GK) – The German shot stopper has been vital to Barcelona’s form this season and has established himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers. He will retain his place on Sunday.

Sergio Roberto (RB) – With Nelson Semedo picking up a calf injury against Celta Vigo, Roberto will continue to fill in at right-back until the Portuguese’s return to action. Roberto adds a bit more defensive stability and will attempt to keep the likes of João Félix quiet.

Gerard Pique (CB) – Pique has been a mainstay in Barcelona’s defence since joining the Catalan giants from ?Manchester United in 2008. A yellow card suspension kept the centre back sidelined against Dortmund and he should return to the starting XI on Sunday.

Samuel Umtiti (CB) – Umtiti had a solid game against ?Dortmund on Tuesday night and kept the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Julian Brandt at bay. Umtiti is a little more experienced than his French counterpart Clement Lenglet and so Valverde may well opt for the 26-year-old.

Junior Firpo (LB) – With Jordi Alba suffering from a recurring hamstring injury, Firpo played the full 90 minutes against Dortmund and should get the nod at left-back again on Sunday due a lack of alternatives.

Midfielders

UEFA Champions League"FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund"

Arturo Vidal (DM) – The yellow card suspension to Sergio Busquets would be a huge miss for Barcelona. With a high-pressing midfield, Atlético can cause problems for any side in the world. Luckily, Barça have exactly the player to counter such a press; Arturo Vidal. The 32-year-old has built a reputation for being a combative midfielder and a wonderful technician, and should keep his place in the starting XI on Sunday.

Arthur Melo (CM) – Tenacious, destructive, yet possessing a high technical ability, Arthur has established himself as a superb all-rounder. The Brazilian is exactly the type of midfielder needed to suppress the likes of ?Atlético’s Thomas Partey and Koke.

Frenkie de Jong (CM) – Quite simply, De Jong is undroppable. The 22-year-old has been outstanding since his summer move from Ajax and is illustrating exactly why Barcelona forked out £67.5m for the Dutchman’s services with a number of mature performances.

Forwards

FBL-C1-EUR-BARCELONA-DORTMUND

Lionel Messi (RW) – Messi continues to stake his claim as the world’s very best as he netted his 613th goal in 700 games for Barcelona on Wednesday. The diminutive Argentine is the heart and soul of FCB and will no doubt feature in Valverde’s starting XI on Sunday.

Antoine Griezmann (LW) – Griezmann hasn’t enjoyed the best of times since his summer move from Sunday’s opponents Atlético Madrid. However, recent performances have shown glimpses of what the 28-year-old is capable of. With Ousmane Dembélé out for ten weeks after picking up a hamstring injury on Tuesday, Griezmann should feature in place of the Frenchman.

Luis Suarez (ST) – Despite being 32 and entering the twilight of his career, Suarez is showing no signs of slowing down. The Uruguayan has scored ten goals in 15 appearances for Barcelona so far this season and will look to continue his impressive scoring record against a tough Atlético side on Sunday.

Weekly Predictions: Forecasting Newcastle vs Man City, Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona & More

We’ve got another big weekend in European football coming up.

Title races throughout the continent are hotting up, with sides like Liverpool, Barcelona, Borussia Monchengladbach and ?Juventus currently leading their respective leagues.

So, wanna hear what the 90min editors think will happen in games like Newcastle vs Manchester City, Manchester United vs Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona? Of course you do!

Alaves vs Real Madrid

Saturday 30/11 – 12:00

Zinedine Zidane

By ?Chris Deeley

Are Real Madrid back? No idea. But they’re looked really good for a few weeks now, and were just a couple of late lapses away from following up a very strong win over La Real with victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Alaves, meanwhile, have been far from spectacular this season – but are at least quite solid at the back. They haven’t faced Karim Benzema yet though, and the Frenchman will tear their little faces off.

Newcastle vs Manchester City

Saturday 30/11 – 12:30

Pep Guardiola,Steve Bruce

By ?Jude Summerfield

Newcastle seem to be discovering what they’re all about after an indifferent start to the season.

Prior their loss to Aston Villa, the Magpies had gone three games without defeat, winning two of those to put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three.

However, it’s hard to see Newcastle getting back to winning ways in Saturday’s early kick off when they host Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side will be without Sergio Aguero, but Gabriel Jesus is a more than capable replacement and he’ll be able to fire the Premier League champions to victory.

Chelsea vs West Ham

Saturday 30/11 – 15:00

Frank Lampard

By ?Toby Cudworth

If you looked at this fixture out of context, you’d probably expect Chelsea to run out comfortable winners against West Ham.

Look at it in context and you expect Chelsea to absolutely batter the Hammers at Stamford Bridge. That’s because Frank Lampard’s side are good, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are bad and the form table suggests that anything other than a comfortable home victory would be staggering.

History will also tell you that Saturday’s game will be anything but fun for West Ham – they are winless at Chelsea in 13 attempts, last running out winners in 2002 during a Paolo Di Canio-inspired 3-2 win. Yuck.

Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen

Saturday 30/11 – 17:30

Robert Lewandowski

By ?Krishan Davis

Bayern since Nice Kovac was sacked in the aftermath of a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on 2 November? Goals, goals, goals – and none conceded. The Bavarian giants have netted 16 times without reply in just four games since Hans-Dieter Fick was installed as interim head coach, all of which were scored by Robert Lewandowski (probably).

While Leverkusen are on something of an decent run, it is difficult to see them halting the Munich juggernaut – especially at the Allianz.

By Sean Walsh

Another week, another high profile sacking in north London, with Unai Emery finally leaving Arsenal after a disastrous start to the season.

The Spaniard was reportedly expecting to take charge at Norwich on Sunday, but instead Freddie Ljungberg will be on the touchline barking all the orders at Carrow Road.

Liberated by the departure of a man no one found popular, the New Manager Bounce™ should help Arsenal over the line here, though not without still exposing their glaring defensive issues.

By Jude Summerfield

Ole Gunnar opted to field the weans on Thursday night, but he had idea that the weans would turn against by full time, Manchester United eventually succumbing to a 2-1 loss at Astana.

However, it’ll be a totally different team that will take to the Old Trafford turf on Sunday when they face Aston Villa, and they should have enough firepower in attack to take them past the Villans.

Don’t be surprised if Dean Smith’s side get on the scoresheet, but United ought to edge this tight encounter.

Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona

It took Barcelona five attempts to win on the road this season, and they didn’t look good last weekend at Leganes (or in their previous trip, away at the start of the month, when they lost to Levante). However. Ernesto Valverde’s side have won five of their last six on the road, and are building something that looks suspiciously like momentum.

Atleti…aren’t. They’ve won three of ten, or five of 15. They’ve even conceded in six straight games, which is so out of character for a Diego Simeone side. This is far, far from a vintage Atletico Madrid side, to the point that predicting them to lose this weekend is not even a little bit bold.

Barcelona Confirm Yet Another Lengthy Injury Layoff for Ousmane Dembélé After Latest Muscle Issue

?Barcelona have confirmed that winger Ousmane Dembélé is expected to miss around ten weeks of action to recover from a hamstring injury he suffered in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Dembélé managed just 26 minutes of the game against his former side before being forced off through injury. He went to jump to control the ball and instantly looked in real discomfort, eventually leaving the field in tears.

He was quickly sent for further tests to determine the extent of the injury, and ?Barcelona have now confirmed on their ?official website that ?Dembélé will not be seen on the pitch again in 2019.

It was initially thought that Dembélé may only miss five or six weeks as a result of this latest setback, but it appears as though this hamstring injury is slightly more serious than it was believed to be on Wednesday.

This ten-week layoff means Dembélé is unlikely to return to action until February 2020. He will miss clashes with both ?Atlético Madrid and ?Real Madrid in December, while it will be touch-and-go whether he returns in time for the ?Champions League round of 16 next year.

Ousmane Dembele

The 22-year-old has struggled greatly with injury since making his big-money move from ?Dortmund in 2017 and could be set to watch at least another ten ?La Liga games from the sidelines as he recovers.

His issues have been so frequent that teammate ?Luis Suárez opted to ?publicly plead with doctors to find a way to protect Dembélé from these recurring injuries which have plagued his Barcelona career.

Ernesto Valverde

It was Antoine Griezmann who replaced Dembélé on Wednesday, and he will almost certainly remain in the lineup for the foreseeable future alongside both Suárez and ?Lionel Messi.

Youngsters Carles Pérez and Ansu Fati will give Ernesto Valverde some much-needed depth over the coming weeks, but Barcelona may be forced to look to their academy yet again if any more of their senior players go down with injuries.
