Outrage as Atleti Sell Just 50 Tickets for Super Cup Semi-Final Clash With Barcelona

?Atletico Madrid have sold just 50 tickets for their Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Barcelona next week. 

The tournament, which has seen a rejig in its structure, has been a topic of controversy since it was announced last year. 

Instead of the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey competing in the domestic Super Cup before the start of the league season, this time both finalists from the 2018/19 Copa del Rey and the remaining highest-ranked teams from the 2018/19 La Liga season will compete in a mini-tournament midway through the season, held in Saudi Arabia.

And now, Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo has revealed that Atleti have sold just 50 tickets for the club’s clash with Barcelona in the semi-final of the competition. 

With the expenses that come with travelling to Saudi Arabia for the 50 fans, the club has promised to pay for the tickets, and should Diego Simeone’s side overcome the Catalan giants in their first game, Atleti will give them free tickets for the final – which will be against either Valencia or Real Madrid.

It’s been agreed for the competition to be held in Saudi Arabia for the next three years, causing outrage amongst Spanish fans. Overall, it has been estimated that flights to and from Saudi Arabia cost in the region of £600, with an expected total spend of around £1000 when you factor in hotels and spending money.

Atleti’s game with Barcelona takes place in Jeddah on 9th January, one day after the first semi-final. 

Los Rojiblancos will be looking to win just their third Supercopa de Espana – winning the trophy in 1985 and more recently in 2014. Their semi-final opponents, meanwhile, will be hoping to continue their dominance in regards to the Super Cup. Barcelona have got their hands on the trophy on 13 occasions and are the current holders after beating Sevilla 2-1 last time out.
