Barcelona Open to Luis Suárez Departure as Club Anticipates MLS Bid

Barcelona are understood to be open to allowing Luis Suárez to leave the club for Major League Soccer in the summer if they receive an acceptable offer.

The 32-year-old remains one of the world’s most prolific forwards, but Barcelona have long been on the lookout for a potential long-term replacement for the Uruguayan.

According to ?ESPN, ?Barcelona are not actively looking to part ways with ?Suárez, who they feel could still command a sizeable transfer fee, but they also would not block his departure if he did ask to leave.

A move to ?MLS has been suggested, with David Beckham’s Inter Miami regularly linked with Suárez, but it is unlikely that any team in the division would be able to put together a satisfactory offer for Barcelona.

However, should a concrete offer arrive, Barcelona would be left with a real dilemma about whether to let Suárez go.

Given he is under contract until 2021, Barcelona are aware that they only have a limited amount of time to be able to demand a substantial fee for Suárez, and the chance to get his sky-high salary off the wage bill is also seen as a positive.

However, they also do not want to risk making the team worse. Having thus far failed to find a long-term solution to their striker situation, Barcelona do not want to allow Suárez to walk away until they are prepared for his exit.

They also do not want to upset ?Lionel Messi. The Argentine is known to be incredibly close to Suárez both on and off the pitch, and Barcelona do not want to do anything which will damage their relationship with Messi.

It all seems as though it will come down to whether Suárez actually wants to push for a move. Uruguay teammate and Seattle Sounders midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro told the MLS’ ?official website that Suárez is always asking about life in the division, describing it as “only a matter of time” before the striker makes the move.

“I think you need to convince Barcelona [because] he wants to come to MLS,” Lodeiro said. “He is always asking me about the league. His dream was to play for Barcelona. He’s playing at a great level and he feels comfortable there.

“Sooner or later he’ll come to MLS, though. Well, hopefully. He likes the league. He’s always asking me things about it. I think it’s only a matter of time before he’s out here.”
